Sigh... and Random Thoughts

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (a reference sure to sail over Sissy's head, if/when she ever arrives), I still have not had the baby. Today is my due date. I'm going to start charging her late fees after this. Three weeks ago when my doctor told me I was three centimeters, I did not think for one second that I would still be pregnant at this point. And yet here I am.

Andrew and I went to a movie this afternoon while Grandma Susan watched Milo. We saw The Descendants, starring George Clooney. Good film, but made me cry a lot. I'm a crier in general, but pregnancy doesn't help matters. But it was nice to get out and go on a date. It reminded me of the days just before Milo was born, when Andrew and I thought, better get out and see movies while we still can.

Last night we actually watched the MU-kU game (I'm still a Tiger at heart; see how I lowercased the k?). To say that we are not sports fans is an understatement, but it was fun and our team won, so that's always good. Tonight I hear there is another sporting event on the television. Something called the Super Bowl. Maybe Sissy is just not into the sports, so she figured she'd wait until all this hullabaloo was over before making her appearance. Crossing my fingers that that is the case.

Milo has learned how to cross his fingers. To explain what it meant in simple terms, I said it meant good luck. So he's been crossing his fingers a lot lately and saying "guh lllluck." It's adorable, the way he works so hard to get the right finger crossed over the one next to it. Hearing him learn all these new phrases and things is so fun. Weird to think that this new baby won't be able to talk at all. She'll have everything to learn still. Good thing she'll have her big brother to explain it all.

Signing off, before I start crying for the second time today.

  • Participated in EarthWalk
  • Picked up two twig-like dogwood trees at the EarthFest
  • Planted two twig-like dogwood trees
  • Watched the first thirteen episodes of Arrested Development on Hulu

In which I mention Segways for the second time on this blog.

I happened to watch Dancing With the Stars tonight. (Don't judge me. Andrew had class and I needed a break from HGTV.) My thoughts: Watching Steve Wozniak dance the tango was one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. Samantha, who does all the backstage interviews and begs "America" to vote, is really annoying. And Melissa, of former Bachelor "fame," looked like Minnie Mouse, if Minnie Mouse was trying to pick up Mickey on a street corner. (and I'm pretty sure they stuck some glitter patch thing on her lower back to cover up her tramp stamp.) These, among other reasons, are why I don't normally like this show.

But back to The Woz for a second . . . In his little staged, pre-dance intro bit, he and a bunch of other people rode in on Segways. It was a sort of choreographed, parade of nerdiness. I thought, this is lame, but it would be awesome if OKGo were doing it. That would be a YouTube sensation for sure.

(Unfortunately, Carrie Ann, Len, and Bruno only gave me 11 points for blogging this week. Come on, America, I need your votes!)

In Praise of the Bullet Point

I seem to have forgotten how to write a cohesive narrative. Hence:

  • The tulips I planted last fall are starting to come up. So cute! But—I’m worried about them freezing. It’s supposed to be in the low 20s in the next few days. Hold on, pretty tulips!
  • Andrew and I started a band. We call ourselves The Langs. My stage name is Meggs and his is Dru. We rock pretty hard.
  • Andrew convinced me that it was time to purchase Rock Band 2.
  • My friends Stephanie and Lindsey started doing small group personal training with me. It’s pretty awesome, because I pay half as much yet get the same amount of attention, and my trainer actually makes 50 percent more. It’s a win-win all around.
  • I’m going on a date with my dad tonight and I’m really looking forward to it. There’s a Hitchcock film series playing at a local arts theater, so we’re going to see “To Catch a Thief.” My dad loves Cary Grant, so I grew up watching classics like “Bringing Up Baby,” “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House,” and “Operation Petticoat.” But I haven’t seen “To Catch a Thief,” so this should be a lot of fun.
  • I pretty much hate Daylight Saving Time. Except for that whole staying-light-later-at-night thing, that is.
  • We totally forgot Daylight Saving Time—until we were woken at 6:45am with a call from my FIL, saying he was on his way over. And of course, it was actually 7:45 (which is still too damn early).
  • I love spring thunderstorms.
  • I prepared our taxes this weekend. Blehhhhhhh. Why do they have to be so complicated? And why do we owe so much money?
  • American Idol is disappointing me this year. But will I quit watching it? Probably not. Okay, definitely not.
  • At work, it is Trend Week. That means that every day there are presentations and speakers that have to do with upcoming trends. This year’s theme is 200-Mile Radius. Or something like that. And yesterday we were given a “new” term: locavore. Thanks, work, but I’m pretty sure I heard that term, like, two years ago.
  • I still like Trend Week.

My lameness. Let me show you it.

Ahh, yesterday. All my troubles seemed so far away. But then I found out that Andrew invited a friend over (Hi Jeff!) to watch a movie after work. Don’t They Know That American Idol Was Going To Be On And That I Must Watch It? And That We Only Have One Television?

So I was faced with a dilemma. Yes, we have a DVR, so I could just record AI (American Idol, people, not the Steven Spielberg/Haley Joel Osment crapfest of 2001) and watch it the next day. But noooo! The media will talk about it, and I will hear it, and it will ruin it all! So I must watch on the day it is on. I suppose I could wait to watch it until the movie is over. But then it would be so late, and I need my sleep (because, seriously, I am Old), and I wouldn’t be able to vote for David Cook! Tragic!

What to do? Let me tell you what I did. I emailed a few of my friends, the ones I thought were least likely to laugh at me, and begged them to let me come over and watch the show with them. It was kind of a new low. Frankly, I’m not sure why I’m sharing this with you. Perhaps as a warning? I may invite myself over to your homes at any moment.

I got a handful of responses that literally all started with “Hahaha!” I kid you not. But my good friend Stephanie took pity on me and invited me over. Rather, she allowed me to invite myself over. And she was so awesome! She made dinner, and gave me wine, and we watched the entire two-hour episode of AI. And she doesn’t usually even watch it! I had a really fun time. I hope Andrew watches more movies during AI in the future so I can hang out at Stephanie’s again.

BTW, funny story: I got home before the movie was over, so I went upstairs and read a book. When Jeff left, Andrew came upstairs and we were talking. About ten minutes later, we heard some kind of car noise. Andrew looked out the window, and Jeff was just leaving. He bought a new car yesterday with a manual transmission. And who is still learning to drive a stick shift? I’ll give you three guesses. . .

I can't help myself. . .

Is liking American Idol soooo yesterday? I don't care. I can't help it. I'm a fan! And this year, I feel a particular connection to the show because I karaoked with one of the contestants! One of the good ones! Even Simon thinks he might win! Is the suspense killing you? Which contestant is it, you ask. Tell me, you say. Okay, I say. It's David Cook! Now go check out his website and start voting for him! For this is the first year I am actually voting for anybody on American Idol, and it makes the whole experience much more interesting.

Help David Win!
