First Day of 2nd Grade
Back to school today for Milo! 2nd grade this year. He actually seemed ready to go back this year. I think summer's quality time with his sister was wearing thin. (They've been fighting nonstop for the last two weeks. Except when they're getting along fabulously. But no in-between.)
Took our traditional front-porch first-day-of-school photo. See how he's grown?

Andrew and I walked him to his classroom this morning. I took a couple pictures, and as I hugged him goodbye, I got all choked up. Totally surprised myself. I thought that sending Milo off to school was old hat by now. He knows what he's doing, he does well every year. What is there to be emotional about? But maybe it was just that--he's doing so well, he doesn't need me much anymore. My little boy is getting so big.
Olive starts kindergarten on Tuesday. Up until this morning, I thought I wouldn't be very emotional dropping her off either. Now I know I'm super wrong. Definitely will be a day for waterproof mascara and a ready tissue.

A breakthrough
Olive requested ponytails today. She has only recently kept them in for more than 20 seconds at a time, and today, without any prompting, she asked for them. And she looks so stinking cute with pigtails in her hair. (She calls them ponytails.) It's a small thing, but it makes me smile.

Didn't we just do this?
Today we began potty training Olive. Crazy? Maybe. Maybe not. She is definitely on the young side for it, but I'm confident she will pick it up quickly. (I must say though, after going at this for about eight hours, I am a little less confident than I was this morning.)
Yesterday I bought a bunch of panties. Superheros, Dora, and standard-issue Hanes. All a little on the big side. Apparently Target doesn't stock panties small enough for a 17-month-old. I washed them, dried them, and got them all ready for her to wear this morning. Good thing I bought a bunch. So far she has gone through five pairs, I think. In eight and a half hours, three of which were spent napping. Another hour of which was spent playing pantsless out in the sprinkler.
So. That sort of sums that up. We've got a long road ahead of us, perhaps, but I'm going to give it a good shot. She doesn't start at her new daycare for another week, so since she'll be with me or the grandmothers this entire week, it seemed like a good time to focus on using the potty. And if she shows no signs of improving or getting the hang of it after a few days, we can always call it off and try again in a few months. I'm not completely crazy.

Aww
Tonight Olive had a little trouble falling asleep. Teething, etc. I snuggled her for awhile, reminiscing about how I used to pace around her room, holding her the same way, when she was just a couple months old during those long nights where she just didn't feel like sleeping in her crib. She's much bigger now, but her head feels just as sweet on my shoulder.
As I laid her back down in her crib, I smoothed her hair back from her forehead and said, "I love you." And Olive, with her paci half hanging out of her mouth, said, "Ahhhhwuhh too."
It is these kinds of moments that will live in my mind forever.

How many times can I say the word pee in this post?
Ah, potty training. We're doing it, baby.
Andrew and I had been following that whole wait-'til-he's-ready thing, but about a week ago we changed our tune. Pretty sure Milo was not going to be one of those kids who just up and decided it was time to pee in the potty. Milo is stubborn and determined and willful. He likes to make his own decisions. And so far, he has not wanted much of anything to do with the potty. Not for Skittles. Not for marshmallows. Not for cotton balls (our reward system for Milo: he earns cotton balls for his cotton ball jar when he does something good, then when the jar is full we go out for ice cream or some other fun thing).
Then last weekend, about a month before his 3rd birthday, we just kind of decided it was time. We talked up how Saturday was Big Boy Underwear Day and isn't that soooooo exciting? We get to go to the Big Boy Underwear store and pick out some Big Boy Underwear and—ooh!!—maybe the Big Boy Underwear will have THOMAS on it!! Lots of verbal exclamation points were used.
And thank Sir Topham Hatt, Walmart sold Thomas underwear. Milo and I picked out three (identical) packs for a total of 21 pairs of Big Boy Underwear. I figured that this, combined with the seven pairs of Old Navy truck underwear we already had, would be enough to get us through the first few days, even though the truck underwear was basically unacceptable (to Milo) because the trucks were all on the butt and Milo could not see them and therefore would not wear them.
Milo was very excited about his new Thomas Big Boy Underwear. Upon taking them out of the package, though, Milo was EXTREMELY disappointed that Thomas was on the back. Seriously, underwear manufacturers, get a clue! Little boys want to look at Thomas! And they can't see their own butts! Put the Useful train on the front!! Fortunately, a few of the pairs had all-over patterns, which were acceptable though not as good as the big Thomas.
That first day, Milo had two pee accidents and peed in the potty once. He mostly stayed dry and did not poop all day. I think he was pretty good at holding it from the start of our little potty training adventure. He was still in a diaper for naptime and overnight. And after that first day, there has been no looking back. He no longer wants to wear a diaper ever, though he accepts it at naptime and overnight. He's doing great. He has pooped in the potty TWICE!! and peed several more times.
He's still had accidents every day, but more successes, too. I think he is starting to realize how he is controlling things and what happens. He likes the candy rewards, but I don't think that is a huge motivator for him. He has gotten to play games on Daddy's tablet while sitting on the potty, and I think that's what really getting him in there. We also set a timer so he knows when it's time to go try to pee. (We've been using the time for other things, too—like so he knows when it's time to go take a bath or read stories before nap, for instance. The timer is good for this kid.)
This morning he woke up with a dry diaper, which is AMAZING in and of itself, then he went and peed on the potty right away. So proud of him. In less than a week, he's gone from fulltime diaper to waking up dry!
And he looks adorable in his little underwear. Of course, he wears them backward half the time so he can properly see Thomas. This is pretty hilarious, as it causes major wedgies and he's always picking at his undies. But you know, some battles are not worth fighting, and if he wants to wear his underwear backward, so be it.
Parents of little boys, tell me: did you potty train standing or sitting? We have been doing both, but seem to have much more success with sitting. So pretty much sticking to sitting for now. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to this stuff. Advice, give it to me!

Happy Birthday, Olive

Olive Walked Today!
Today Olive took two full steps completely unassisted. I know, I know, it's not much, really. But it's something. As I've mentioned, I think she's been capable of walking for a couple months now, but she's been too cautious to actually let go and move those legs.
Today I think her steps were more a matter of her being too busy thinking about where she was going to have time to consider her means of getting there. She was cruising along the kids' art table we have in the playroom, and she wanted to come over to me. I was sitting just a couple feet from her, so she had to turn and let go of the table to reach me. Pretty exciting.
I kept trying to get her to repeat her performance all day, but she wasn't having it. Maybe tomorrow we'll start to see the real walking begin.

Favorites
Yesterday, for the first time, Milo told me that something was his favorite. I've asked him before what his favorite color was, or what his favorite story was. And he has never been able to answer. I don't think he understood what "favorite" meant. So when he mentioned something about favorites, I decided to ask him about a few others.
"What's your favorite food, Milo?"
"B'nanna!"
"What's your favorite color?"
"Lellow."
"Really? I thought you were going to say blue."
(Oprah-like) "It's lellll-ohhhhh!"
"What's your favorite animal?"
"A bear."
So there you have it. Straight from Milo's mouth. A few of his favorite things.

Good Night, Indeed
Tonight was Andrew's turn to read to Milo before bed. Instead of tucking him in like I usually do, I just went up to say good night.
I gave Milo a big hug and told him I loved him. He said, "I'm gonna have fun reading with Daddy!" I said, "We had fun earlier, didn't we?" He said, "Yeeeeahhh," in the perfect tone of voice that said, well, we did, and I will humor you by admitting it, but of course I will have much more fun with Daddy. I laughed and hugged him tighter. He laughed.
I said, "Can I have a kiss?" And he actually gave me a kiss. Not just put his lips out so I could kiss him, but he really kissed me. Then he kissed me a second time. And I melted a little, so I told him I loved him again. And he said, "I love you."
Such a sweet kid, so amazing. Such an easy thing, loving him. There is nothing in the world like this feeling.

Here we go!
Breaking news: Olive got her very first tooth yesterday (when she was eight months old (future Me will be glad she didn't have to do the math))! And her very second tooth! Yes! Two! At one time! It's a phenomenon I have heard of but never witnessed for myself.
Perhaps this explains the 4:00am wake-up call the other day...
She's going standard teething style; her new chompers are the two middle ones on the bottom. They are very tiny and can be more felt than seen at this point.
And now you have more information on my baby's mouth than you thought you needed. You're welcome.

So proud of that boy
For the first time ever, Milo went to bed last night without his paci. He didn't fuss, he didn't wake up during the night and cry, and he didn't get upset this morning when he didn't have it. He really is a big boy.
We've been weaning him slowly from the paci, talking up what a big boy he is and how big boys don't need pacis anymore. He no longer gets it during diaper changes or traumatic moments (like taking a big tumble or something). And we weren't giving it to him during pre-bedtime story time, either. He was still asking for (and getting) the paci before naptime and right as he was laying down to go to bed.
But not last night. It occurred to me as I was tucking him in that he wasn't asking for it. I considered giving him one, hoping to prevent a middle-of-the-night screaming session. But I resisted, wondering if this might be the night he left his babyhood behind. He did great. He didn't even know he did great, but I'm so proud of him.
We'll see if he goes paci-free tonight, too. Wouldn't that be something?

First play date!
Milo had his first official play date yesterday. Andrew and I had a couples' baby shower to attend (Andrew's first baby shower!), and with all the grandparents out of town, we needed to figure out something to do with Milo. So I asked one of the moms at daycare if she would mind having Milo over to play with her little guy while we went to the shower. Spoiler alert: she said yes!
Milo spent about two and a half hours there and had a great time. New toys to play with (including an electronic guitar toy, which is on Milo's hot list right now), movies to watch, snacks to eat, juice to drink, and a new bed to jump on. Good times were had by all. And Milo's friend's mom said Milo was very well-behaved and nice and fun to have around. That's my guy.
We can't wait to return the favor and have Milo's friend over to play at our house. Can you believe my baby is old enough to have friends over? Wow, time flies.

Over she flips
This morning Olive turned herself over from her back to her tummy. She was playing on her playmat in the bathroom while Andrew took a shower, and when I walked in, she was lying on her tummy with one arm awkwardly squashed underneath her. "Did you lay her down on her tummy?" I asked Andrew. Nope. "Then she must have rolled over," I logically concluded.
And after one crappy cell phone photo was taken, she rolled back to her typical face-up position and the moment was over.
She sure is getting strong, don't you think?

The day has come.
Nooooo!!!!1!
Milo just walked out of his bedroom. After he had been tucked in for the night. After his bedroom door had been shut. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS???
Milo has figured out how to grasp and turn a doorknob while also pulling open the door. And just like that, our blissful kid-free evenings are over.

Mush
This morning as Milo and Daddy were about ready to head out the door, I asked Milo for a hug. I didn't actual expect him to comply, as he typically says "no" or ignores me altogether. But not today. Today he promptly came over and practically attacked me with a great big hug.
And then? Milo said, "I love you." Completely unprompted. That was the first time he straight up told me he loved me. I hugged him so tight and told him that I loved him. And then he was on his way out the door, leaving me smiling in his wake.
Happy early Mother's Day to me.

All the Way
She did it! Olive slept through the night for the first time. And none of that "waking up at 4am counts as through the night, right?" stuff, either. She really did it. Went to sleep for the night at 7:45pm, didn't wake up until around 6:15 this morning.
It was awesome. (My boobs didn't really think so. They were angry and Hulk-like and refused to let me sleep on my side after about 5am. Oh, and then when she finally got to nurse and relieve me, she ate and ate andateandateandate until she could not possibly fit another drop in. Then she burped and spewed approximately 30 ounces of milky goo all over me.)
But seriously. Olive's timing was pretty spectacular. We spent the weekend visiting friends in Springfield, and Milo decided not to sleep, really, while we were there. I was up many, many times in the night with him (and Olive), retrieving pacis and tucking Kitty in next to him. And though the trip was super fun, Andrew and I were tired and very much appreciated the solid night of sleep.
Speaking of Springfield, our trip was great. First time the four of us visited people who do not have children, so we had to remember everything, from wipes to sippy cups to toys to burp cloths. And we did it. And Milo had a great time. We toured Fantastic Caverns, where touching the wet ceiling was a big hit, as was riding unbuckled in any sort of vehicle. Side note: I do not recommend trying to nurse your baby on this tour. Not easy. We also went to the biggest Bass Pro this side of the Mississippi (or anywhere, possibly). Milo loved the turtles, the fish, the water, and all the stuffed bears. Great fun for toddlers. We ate delicious food (hello, blueberry-strawberry muffins), watched terrible movies (Action Jackson, anyone?) and generally had a fabulous time. All was well, except for the part where Milo wouldn't go to bed until we were with him in the room, so he stayed up until well past 10:00. Not great, but he remained in surprisingly good spirits considering.
I'm wondering if Olive's great night of sleeping was due in part to all the newness of a trip out of town. Who knows? I'm crossing my fingers she repeats her magnificent sleeping performance tonight.

Milestones
Olive first rolled over from her back to her front when she was just three days old. It had to be a fluke; surely the weight of her massive head propelled her over. But yesterday she rolled over from back to front three times. Not a fluke. The third time I was ready with the video camera. (Which was something I never managed to be with Milo, no matter how many times I tried. I do have many, many videos of him crying and NOT rolling over, however. So I call this a win for the second child!)

All Smiles
There is nothing in the world like a smiling baby. And with those dimples, my Olive is about the most adorable baby in the world.
