Olive Walks: The Video

Get this: Milo and Olive starting walking AT EXACTLY THE SAME AGE.

Yes, it's true. Eleven months and three days.

As you know, Olive has been tossing around the idea of walking for a long time, but hasn't gotten her act together to just do it already. But on Friday, she did. Andrew and I set up camp about six feet apart and helped her stand until she was balanced. Then we would let her go and the other one would encourage her to head his way. Wouldn't you know it, she actually did. She took a whole bunch of steps.

Hooray for Olive!

Funnily enough, we were at the mall. Down in that play area by the carousel. Andrew tried to take a crappy cell phone video, but he had it in still-camera mode and took a probably-blurry-and-instantly-deleted photo instead. FAIL. And also we were trying to keep an eye on our other child. (And yes, sadly, that is what we did for Friday night entertainment: went to the mall for Panera and playtime. Parenthood! It does wonders for your social life!)

But didn't someone say something about a video? Oh, yes, that.

Olive Walked Today!

Today Olive took two full steps completely unassisted. I know, I know, it's not much, really. But it's something. As I've mentioned, I think she's been capable of walking for a couple months now, but she's been too cautious to actually let go and move those legs.

Today I think her steps were more a matter of her being too busy thinking about where she was going to have time to consider her means of getting there. She was cruising along the kids' art table we have in the playroom, and she wanted to come over to me. I was sitting just a couple feet from her, so she had to turn and let go of the table to reach me. Pretty exciting.

I kept trying to get her to repeat her performance all day, but she wasn't having it. Maybe tomorrow we'll start to see the real walking begin.

Walkin' on Sunshine

Andrew and I have been coaxing Milo to walk for the last couple of weeks (like you see in these photos, which were taken last week). He could stand fairly well, but he always panicked and wanted to either hold onto something or sit down.
But we persisted, and tonight he gave in. At eleven months and three days, Milo took his first steps!
Milo and I were in the living room, and he was playing with my work ID badge. He stood up all on his own, and balanced there for quite a while. He tentatively took a step, then three more before sitting down.
I cheered and clapped for him. He was all, what are you clapping for? To him, it was just another day. But to me, it was the first step toward a whole new beginning.
